At Salud y Paz, we talk about taking an integral approach to education. But what does that actually mean? For our students, it means looking at the whole child to address their language and educational needs, nutrition and hygiene, and medical and dental care. But we go beyond that. April is the second trimester and a critical point in the school year when we implement extracurricular programs to support classroom learning. This year, we are working with two psychologists to provide group education sessions for parents and to evaluate students who are experiencing challenges in the classroom meeting their learning goals. Together with the psychologists we will determine what additional services we can provide such as speech therapy, psychopedagogy, or individual tuition. This is an important component of our trauma-informed approach to address the increasing inequities experienced by our student population. In April, we also had the privilege of hosting the local Bomberos at Colegio Susanna Wesley. The first responders taught the children about emergency preparedness and the important role of the Bomberos in the community.Salud y Paz strives to involve children's parents, caregivers and community leaders in their education, understanding that their active participation provides the optimal environment for children’s learning.Thank you for doing this important work with us!~ Laura Shearer, Executive Director ...
