From Father to Son: a Legacy of Impact![]()

Your gift to our Summer Appeal honors long-term patients like Juan and invests in a future where our communities can take control of their health
For more than a decade, Juan has made the monthly journey to our clinic to manage his high blood pressure. His story with Salud y Paz began in 2015, when his father—already receiving diabetes care—encouraged him to seek help. “The clinic helped me and it can help you too,” his father told him.![]()
Juan works as a farmer and, like many patients in our communities, lives with limited income. Consistent, accessible care has transformed his life. Month after month, he is able to keep his condition under control. “Salud y Paz has been so important for my life. I’m very grateful.”![]()
Juan’s story is one of thousands. Each year, more than 3,000 patients walk through our doors and at least half of those visits are patients seeking solutions for chronic illnesses like hypertension and diabetes. Indigenous Mayan communities are disproportionately affected by the risks of chronic disease due to lack of access to medical care, healthy foods, and equipment to observe blood sugar and blood pressure.![]()
Our team advocates for and puts resources in the hands of every one of our chronic illness patients. Through a growing network of allied health centers, we ensure that patients can continue receiving care closer to home.![]()
By building relationships, educating families and creating a system of continuity of care, we empower patients to prevent and manage disease.![]()
Thank you for standing with us as we build a healthier future.![]()

Healthy Smiles at Colegio Susanna Wesley![]()
We believe that a healthy smile starts early and prevention is key!![]()
We recently conducted our annual dental evaluation for the students at Colegio Susanna Wesley. With parental permission, 43 of the 45 students were examined, with the goal of assessing their dental health and creating personalized treatment plans for the year ahead.![]()
Each child received a dental check-up, along with individualized instructions on how to better care for their teeth based on their diagnosis. Among the students, 22 girls and 21 boys, aged 5 to 7 years—the evaluation revealed:![]()
• 215 teeth with cavities, most with a good chance of being saved through restorative treatment.
• 67 teeth requiring extraction due to severe decay or obstruction of permanent teeth.
• 77 teeth with minor cavities, eligible for preventive sealing treatments.![]()
In addition, all students will be scheduled for their next dental cleaning and fluoride application to protect their teeth for the long term.![]()
The results remind us how important it is to maintain strong dental hygiene habits from an early age. While some extractions are still necessary, the focus remains on prevention and restoration—clear signs that our efforts are making a real difference! ![]()
Moving forward, we plan to reintroduce weekly fluoride rinses and continue encouraging families to support healthy eating habits and better oral hygiene at home.![]()
When you give to Salud y Paz, you help ensure that children not only learn but grow up healthy with bright smiles and brighter futures.![]()

An Encounter with Gratitude![]()
Our Board of Directors for Salud y Paz meets in person twice a year. Each year one of those meetings occurs in Guatemala so that we can spend time with staff, students at the school and lay eyes on the overall organization.![]()
Last month our board was in country and for me, this was perhaps the 25th time that I was in Guatemala between participating on service teams or my time on the board.![]()
During my trips, I’ve witnessed many stories of how Salud y Paz has changed the lives of the Mayan people that we serve and this trip was no different. Our board was greeted upon arrival at the clinic by a woman that we had not seen before. During our meeting with staff, she shared an emotional story of how Salud y Paz had saved her life. The medical staff along with a member of a medical team quickly diagnosed a serious condition and provided treatment. As a result, she is healthy now and very grateful for the treatment that she received from Salud y Paz. That day she prepared a lunch for the staff to express her heartfelt thanks.![]()
Salud y Paz is making a real difference in the health and education of Mayans. I am proud of our organization and the impact we have. Thank you for supporting the mission with your gifts and service teams!

When Alicia first stepped into the world of community service, she couldn’t have predicted how profoundly it would shape her life. Her journey began in 2002—not as a health worker, but as a young woman recently graduated from high school, eager to use the English skills she had worked hard to develop.![]()
She began by transcribing the Bible into K’iche’ and was soon invited to interpret for medical missions. Though hesitant—her English wasn’t perfect—she accepted the challenge. Armed with a vocabulary notebook and determination, Alicia stepped into the role of interpreter. That one opportunity sparked a lifelong passion for serving her community.![]()
From those early days, Alicia continued to grow—interpreting for organizations, supporting families with children facing health challenges, and expanding her skills in every direction. “I may not be a university graduate,” she says, “but I know women can lead and make a difference. We just have to believe we can.”![]()
Alicia’s talent and compassion brought her to Salud y Paz in 2019. She began as an interpreter—a vital member of our team, ensuring visiting clinicians could provide culturally appropriate care in rural communities. Then she took on a new role: Promotora de Salud—a community health promoter.![]()
For the past year, Alicia has worked directly with people living with chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. Her role goes beyond interpreting; she now leads educational sessions, helping patients understand their diagnoses, make informed choices, and improve their lives through better nutrition and habits.![]()
“I love this job,” Alicia says. “We can’t always cure illness, but we can give people more time, more health, more knowledge.”![]()
She delivers this education in K’iche’, making healthcare more accessible to our partner communities.![]()

Breaking the Cycle: Menstrual Kit Distribution![]()
We have launched a new initiative to empower women and girls through the distribution of reusable sanitary pads—an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution that helps address menstrual health equity in our partner communities. This initiative has allowed us to reach hundreds of women and girls.![]()
This effort has been made possible thanks to the generous donation of menstrual kits by a member of the Lions Club service team, who also serves as an ambassador for the organization Days for Girls. Their support has allowed us to reach dozens of women and girls with supplies and education on reproductive health.![]()
In January, twelve mothers of our students received 24 kits. The response was positive, with the women expressing gratitude and interest in continuing to use this sustainable option.![]()
In February, the program expanded. A total of 233 kits were distributed to women receiving care at the Camanchaj and Urbina clinics. Each recipient received individual guidance on proper use and care to ensure long-term durability.![]()
In March, 66 reusable kits were distributed. Kits were given to students at the local elementary school of Camanchaj. An educational session was held to explain menstruation and the correct use of the pads, using visual materials to support the learning. For many students, this was their first exposure to accurate, supportive information about their bodies and cycles. ![]()
In April, 172 kits were distributed. 60 kits were delivered to students at the local secondary school of Camanchaj, where the educational session included the support of a sign language interpreter to ensure inclusion of students with special needs. 112 kits were distributed at the clinic with a one-on-one explanation focusing on the practical use of the kits and the environmental and economic benefits. ![]()
The goal is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of women and girls—breaking taboos, promoting dignity and offering a sustainable option for menstrual health. ![]()
