Strategic Plan 2026-2028

For a quarter of a century, Salud y Paz has been a pillar of strength in the Mayan Highlands of Guatemala, transforming lives one by one. We’ve seen a generation grow up with our support, and now, it’s their turn to lead.

Today, we are proud to present our strategic plan for the period 2026-2028, which will lay the foundation for the next 25 years and position us to meet the evolving needs of our communities, ensuring our mission remains as vital and effective tomorrow as it is today.

This isn’t just a strategic plan; it’s a commitment to a new way of working—one that is smarter, more responsive, and deeply rooted in the communities we serve.

Our 2026-2028 Strategic Plan is built upon five strategic pillars that will guide our work. You can see the full plan here or review a summary below:

  • Build a Sustainable Model for Growth and Resilience: Ensure our long-term mission by building state-of-the-art facilities and expanding our network of supporters.
  • Enhance Data-Driven Decision-Making: Leverage insights from both stories and data to understand our long-term impact, making smarter decisions that directly benefit the community.
  • Strengthen Quality and Education in Integral Health Programs: Evolve our health programs to meet new patient needs, deploying education and responsive care to empower community health.
  • Improve Educational Attainment for Children in the Camanchaj Area: Deepen our understanding of current barriers to education, innovating beyond our school to help more children in the area succeed.
  • Invest in Locally-Led Development: Empower the community by increasing Mayan representation in leadership and collaborating with other local providers to build a stronger network for change.

Join us in laying the foundation for the next 25 years and beyond!

Our new website is here!

We are so excited to announce the launch of our brand-new website!

Over the last few months, we have been working to create a site that is more modern, user-friendly, and accessible to everyone. We wanted to make it easier for you to find out about our mission, see the impact of your support, and get involved in our work.

What’s new?

  • A fresh look: We have a new design that makes the site easier to navigate on any device.
  • Storytelling: The new site does a better job of sharing the stories of the people and communities we serve, highlighting the real-world impact of your generosity.
  • Simple giving: It’s now easier than ever to make a donation or become a child sponsor or monthly supporter.

We invite you to explore the new site at www.saludypaz.org and let us know what you think. Your feedback is important to us as we continue to improve.

This new website is more than just an update; it’s a tool to help us better connect with you and expand our reach. Thank you for being a part of our community and for your continued support.

Community Voices: A Deeper Look into the Impact of Medical,  Dental and Optical Teams in Rural Guatemala

As part of our commitment to data-driven decision-making and locally-led development, we recently conducted a focus group with community leaders in the rural regions we serve. The feedback we received confirms the vital role our teams play and provides a clear roadmap for strengthening our partnership.

Profound Impact and Growing Demand

The sentiment shared by every community leader was one of deep gratitude and relief. Our teams are consistently described as a lifeline, providing essential healthcare that is otherwise inaccessible. Leaders noted the first-ever medical team received in one of their communities, expressing a universal desire for the teams to return regularly. A central theme was the immense financial relief provided to families, who avoid significant out-of-pocket expenses for services like dental work, medication, and minor surgical procedures. These savings allow them to redirect their limited resources toward other critical needs.

This positive impact has naturally led to a strong desire for continuity. The most resounding request from all participants was for our teams to return and visit more frequently.

Evolving Health Needs and System Gaps

Community leaders highlighted a notable shift in local health challenges. While previous efforts to improve access to clean water have successfully reduced the incidence of water-borne illnesses, new concerns are emerging. Leaders now report a rise in chronic, non-communicable conditions such as diabetes, gastritis, and chronic coughs. They also underscored a pressing, generalized need for vision care, particularly among working populations.

Leaders noted that local health services are often insufficient. Many community health centers operate with limited hours and lack basic medications, often forcing residents to travel to distant towns or seek expensive private care, further underscoring the necessity of our support.

A Coordinated and Holistic Approach

The success of these missions is a testament to strong collaboration. Local community leaders, including members of the Community Development Councils (COCODES), play a vital role in logistical support, communication, and patient flow management. Their local coordination is strong, and they offered constructive, practical suggestions—such as implementing improved patient management systems (like a numbering system) to manage crowds—to streamline future clinics.

Beyond medical, dental, and optical services, the communities deeply appreciate the holistic nature of the teams. They value the teams’ warm interactions with children and the spiritual component, which builds a bond of trust extending far beyond the typical patient-doctor relationship.

A Call to Action for Partnership

The community leaders provided clear recommendations for the future of our collaboration, which we will use to shape our strategy:

  • Increase Frequency: The primary request remains to schedule more frequent team visits throughout the year.
  • Targeted Services: They specifically requested more teams equipped with dental and optical services to address critical gaps.
  • Local Empowerment: Leaders requested training and knowledge-sharing to strengthen their own local leadership capacity and support community-led health initiatives.

Your support is critical. It’s not just about providing healthcare; it’s about empowering communities, building trust, and creating hope through a genuine and sustained partnership. Thank you for being a part of this vital work.

The Impact of Monthly Giving

When Marta, a 59-year-old woman from a small village in Sololá, first came to Salud y Paz, she had been living with a painful, infected wound on her leg for nearly two years. After trying home remedies, costly private treatments and still finding no relief, she arrived at our clinic exhausted, discouraged and in need of real care.

Thanks to the support of donors like you, Marta received specialized wound care, essential medications, and the comfort of knowing she wouldn’t have to choose between her health and her family’s livelihood. Today, she continues her treatment with hope and healing, replacing the fear and pain.

Stories like Marta’s remind us why our medical program matters so deeply. But sustaining this care takes ongoing commitment. By becoming a monthly donor, you ensure that patients like Marta have access to the consistent medical care they need—not just once, but for as long as it takes.

Join us as a monthly giver and help transform lives, one patient at a time.
